Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), Presently the JNVs are spread in 27 States and 7 Union Territories. These are co-educational residential schools fully financed and administered by Government of India through an autonomous organization, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.
Admissions in JNVs are made through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) at Class 6. The medium of instruction in JNVs is the mother tongue or regional language up to Class 8 and English thereafter for Maths and Science and Hindi for Social Science. Students of the JNVs appear for 10th and 12th class examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education. While education in the schools is free including boarding, lodging, uniforms and textbooks, a nominal fee of Rs.200/- per month will have to be paid by the children from IX to XII class. SC/ST, Girls and Physically Handicapped and from the families whose income is below poverty line are exempted from payment of fees.

Accordingly to the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme, one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is to be set up in each District in a phased manner. At present, there are 595 Vidyalayas are sanctioned in 27 States and 7 Union Territories out of which 583 are functioning.

The Board was set up in the year 1921 at Allahabad by an act of United Provinces Legislative Council. It conducted its first examination in 1923. This Board is one in India which, from the very start, had adopted 10+2 system of examination. The first public examination after 10 years education is High School Examination and after the 10+2 stage, there is Intermediate Examination. Prior to 1923, University of Allahabad was the examining body of these two examinations
In view of the ever multiplying load of work in successive years, the Board had been experiencing considerable difficulty in controlling and conducting its activities centrally from Allahabad. The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, Dharamshala came into existence in 1969 as per Himachal Pradesh Act No. 14 of 1968 with its head-quarter at Shimla later shifted to Dharamshala in January 1983. The Board started with a staff of 34 officials which has subsequently increased to 438.
